Students with neurodiversity tend to experience sensory processing difficulties . University in itself can present as a barrier to engagement in learning , with so many things to cause sensory overload , whether that is poor lighting , noise from crowded areas , rough furnishings , lack of visual cues or unhelpful acoustics sensory overload is everywhere in higher education institutions .
Although the Disabled Students Allowance has allowed for students to have funding for appropriate learning resources , university buildings are still working on becoming more inclusive to sensory needs .
Students identified a need for a safe and secure quiet space ; so began the development of the quiet room . This created a space on campus where students could come when they needed some quiet time , whether that be due to a sensory overload or panic attack .
The room promoted independent advocacy and allowed for students to take control of how they were feeling and their reaction to the university environment .
The room enabled them to explore their senses . It also provided an opportunity for each person to learn how to process their own unique sensory experiences . The quiet room was a calming environment , working as a place for soothing , especially when students were experiencing distress .

Using the room relieved pressures from staff in the health and wellbeing team , who would often be called to see a distressed student , as the variety of soothing items in the room enables students to take charge of their emotions .
If sensory issues are ignored and behaviours are extinguished , an alternative behaviour may develop to meet sensory needs , such as selfharm or isolation . Whereas , if a student ’ s sensory needs are not met , it will hinder their ability to learn and participate in education or work need to be met before moving on to levels where learning can take place ( Raver et al 2007 ).

The impact
There is a need to focus on helping students develop coping skills rather than post-experience treatment ; this will help combat the strain on mental health practitioners . Having occupational therapists in universities will help to inspire change in how higher education students ’ mental health is approached .
