We also work in partnership with mental health therapists , disability advisers , university students and staff , to assist students in managing their mental , physical , emotional and financial wellbeing throughout their university journey .
Outcome of our interventions
We have been working at the university medical centre one day a week since February this year and between us , the clinical nurse specialist and occupational therapist have seen a total of 200 patients .
In general , we found that patient mood score at the start of assessment and intervention was two . The primary survey conducted at the university showed that most participants subsequently scored above five on the mood score , indicating that seeing an occupational therapist at the university medical centre was beneficial and improved their mood .
Qualitative feedback from participants highlighted reduced anxiety , improved ability to cope during exams , and a sense of purpose
What ’ s next ?
Expanding and adapting the services to meet the evolving needs of the patients is a crucial aspect of providing effective care . Considering alternatives , such as video or telephone appointments , could be a viable solution to improving engagement , especially for patients who find it challenging to attend in-person sessions . Offering shorter appointment slots of 20 minutes could also help optimise time and accommodate more patients .
We are currently running an anxiety management group . This provides an opportunity for patients to understand how anxiety impacts their lives and learn strategies to manage the physical symptoms associated with anxiety . The aim is to help patients feel less isolated and to progress further with their mental health recovery .
In the future , we plan to use the Recovery Through Activity approach ( Parkinson 2014 ), which engages adults accessing mental health services , helping them recognise the long-term benefits of occupational participation . Tailoring interventions will involve exploring various activities , such as life skills and sensory groups through a focus in primary care .
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health has been significant and it is important to recognise the increase in mental health crises during this time . By actively participating in meaningful activities , patients can aid their recovery or maintain their wellbeing .
Continuing to adapt our services , staying responsive to the changing needs , and emphasising the importance of meaningful activity in mental health recovery will help provide valuable support to our patients .
