OT-led leisure centre programme is making sure ‘ nobody is left behind ’
When it comes to the provision of opportunities to lead an active lifestyle , no resident in Witham and the Braintree District is left behind , thanks to the award-winning Sport for Confidence programme running at Witham Leisure Centre , commissioned by Fusion Lifestyle and Braintree District Council . Since its launch at Witham Leisure Centre in 2016 , the programme has supported hundreds of people , encouraging those who struggle to access mainstream activities to move more , make friends and develop new skills .
Led by occupational therapists and supported by sports coaches , the programme is designed to accommodate the complex needs of all participants and promote positive , bespoke occupational outcomes .
Sarah Davison , Sport For Confidence Senior Occupational Therapist , says : ‘ For most of our
participants , Sport For Confidence provides their first ever positive experience of sport and physical activity . Sadly , this is typical of those with a disability and / or long-term health condition .’
Each week , the programme offers a variety of activities , from seated gentle exercise , swimming , Boccia and dance , to multisports , racket sports and supported gym sessions . Sessions are designed to support and nurture the individual needs and skill developments of those involved , while also accommodating carers and other health professionals where necessary .
Sarah continues : ‘ Without this programme , many of these people would not leave their homes , would not enjoy regular social interactions and would not be active .’

Help RCOT strengthen its governance
RCOT ’ s Council is leading a review of our governance , so that we can be a more responsive , focused and efficient organisation , able to deliver the greatest impact for our members and the wider profession .
We ’ re looking for members to work with us in shaping the way we communicate , engage and consult with members on the governance review . We want to involve members throughout the review , providing opportunities to get a deeper understanding , ask questions , challenge and make suggestions .
You ’ d be helping us finesse our approach and messaging . It could mean answering some questions in a survey or joining a workshop or two . Let us know if you ’ d like to be involved by completing the online form .
Governance is all about how we make decisions . It covers how we ’ re legally structured , and the processes , standards , rules and practices we follow . It guides operations and administration , ethics , risk management and compliance with relevant legislation and regulation . It ensures we focus our efforts on fulfilling our vision and strategic priorities .
Our governance has evolved over many years , and in that time , we ’ ve grown and changed . Some aspects of it are out of date , or more complicated than needed . That ’ s why we ’ ve started to review our governance , so we can make sure it ’ s fit for purpose both today and in the future .
