Helping homeless people to reclaim and rebuild their lives

Hayley Baker and Gabrielle Jones examine some of the most prominent health inequalities encountered and addressed by occupational therapists in the Cardiff Homelessness Service

Homelessness is a complex and persistent public health challenge that can have a devastating effect on individuals , families , and communities . When a person lacks accommodation or a secure tenure , their physical , mental and cognitive health is at significant risk , and they may fall into a downward spiral towards more acute forms of homelessness when a solution is not promptly achieved ( Welsh Government 2019 ).

Public Health Wales has a vision to make homelessness a rarity , as part of its long-term strategy for working towards a healthier future ( Our Healthy Future 2010 ).
Cardiff set out a Homelessness Strategy for 2018-2022 ( Cardiff Council 2018 ) that outlines
