There is lots of change happening behind the scenes at BJOT , as we work to bring the journal in line with modern publishing practices and the needs of the occupational therapy research community .
This month is the first in a series of three bumper issues , as we publish larger-sized issues as part of the new flexible page model that was described in our March editorial .
As such , for the foreseeable future we will not be able to highlight every article published in our monthly journal , but hope to shine a spotlight on some of the themes emerging in the research we publish and how they link to wider questions in occupational therapy .
Our leading editorial this month is from Jo Watson , who has been a vital collaborator for BJOT in the last few months . When RCOT published its Top 10 Research Priorities in 2021 , we wanted the journal to take forward this conversation with a series of editorials on these research priorities , how we can embed these challenges within our BJOT policies and how they will influence what we publish going forward .
We have a great list of authors coming up to talk more about this topic , and hope Jo ’ s article will be the first of many to trigger discussion .
The biggest emerging theme in the April issue surrounds that of the perspectives of caregivers and the importance of lived experience , with a particular focus on children . In the RCOT research priorities , number three is listed as : How can occupational therapists work more effectively with the family and carers of people who access services ?
Manumbah et al , explore the perspectives of caregivers from Zimbabwe on the play of children with HIV / AIDS . Dehghan et al , explore the process of health in mothers
BJOT next issue
during caregiving of children with cerebral palsy . Sleeman and Brown investigated the relationship between children ’ s sensory processing factors and the daily activities they chose to participate in after their parents completed the Sensory Processing Measure Home Form and Children Participation Questionnaire- School .
Howes and Ellison aim to understand how the role of caregiving for an individual with a mental illness impacts on occupational participation and identity .
Mental health is a huge topic here at BJOT and as well as the above , our editor ’ s choice article this month also tackles the topic . The sixth RCOT research priority asks : How can occupational therapy services be more inclusive of both mental and physical health ?
In their systematic review , Daaleman et al , investigate the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions for mental health disorders in primary care , showing a need for further trials .
Research priorities seven and eight ask : What is the role of occupational therapy in supporting self-management ? And what is the role or impact of occupational therapy in reducing hospital admissions ?
Bartlett et al , aimed to explore the lived experience of ME / CFS and subsequent disruption to occupational participation for adults living in Australia . Nicholson et al , explored the barriers and enablers to delivering community-based occupational therapy to people with functional neurological disorder in the UK .

SIPA2 study needs your views
The SIPA2 ( Sensory Impairment and the Pharmaceutical Care of Older People ) study is led by Professor Mags Watson from the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences ( SIPBS ), University of Strathclyde .
It seeks to identify and develop person-centred product and service specifications that meet the needs of older people with sensory impairment ( OPwSI ), enabling them to optimise their health and wellbeing by improving their safe and effective use of medicines .
The purpose of this survey is to gather the views and practice of occupational therapists in terms of their involvement with OPwSI in relation to their medicines ; the use of assistive technologies with these patient populations ; and their education and training needs in relation to the medicines management of OPwSI .
The survey takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and is available at https :// strathsci . qualtrics . com / jfe / form /
