An example that can be looked into is the Rana Plaza incident in Bangladesh. It was one of the terrible incident caused by poor ethical standards set and should be the reason that ethical standards should be raised. The incident happened in the 24 th April 2013, at about 8:45am. In Bangladesh where 3.5 million people are in the garment industry, a garment production building collapses killing over 1000 workers inside the building and injury many more, the building 8 stories high was taken up with the bottom two floors holding a shopping mall and the top 6 being the garment production facility.
The floors where tightly packed with machinery and workers, the main cause of the disaster was that the top two floors had been illegally added, so the structure had been made unsafe.
Cracks began to appear in the walls and pillars, the owner ignored them and wanted to continue with production. The day before the disaster authorities stepped in and ordered everyone to leave as the building was unsafe, the owner did not cooperate and demanded that all workers returned early the following morning and that's when the disaster happened.
The building was producing clothes for Primark, so lots of clothes needed to be produced at a cheap price. This means that production costs have to be kept as low as possible, although Primark were having their garments produced in this factory it was managed by a man by the name of Sohel Rana, he may have not told Primark about this facility. He was caught trying to flee the area by helicopter but was arrested.
To help improve the welfare of workers in the supply chain a set of codes that need to be followed were set up. These are the ETI base codes, below are the following.
A brand who has followed the ETI base codes is New Balance, they sell their products on a positive brand image, they consider ethics in all their activities and have a strong corporate social responsibility. They are one of the top brands that still produce their products in the UK and US. The standards of work are much higher in these countries so it's important to follow the codes. More retailers should start to adopted more of the ETI’s it not only supports the people who work for them but can also improve the brand image.
