CURRENT SPRING 2017
Today, we continually stretch the physical limits of fiber, compute architectures and
storage fabrics to support the need to grab a petabyte-size (1 quadrillion bytes) file
from CERN Switzerland or a 4K resolution video image from the bottom of the ocean.
Through my many interactions with our community both locally and nationally, I get
to learn about the wonderful work of our researchers -- looking at everything from
climate science to healthcare to social and economic conditions.
This issue of the eCurrent looks at a few of the many research projects happening
in our membership. As always, I am so amazed by the work done in our community
and, quite honestly, that not many people really ever hear about it. You will read
about research at Brown University in high-energy physics, a next-generation
science network being built by our Quilt partners on the west coast and a new RI

The “R” in R&E Network stands for research, and is one of the fundamental pillars
the URI Oceanographic Institute with a Q&A with its director, Dwight Coleman. You
will also hear from a high school student from West Warwick who is contributing to a
cancer research project at Stanford, and how the Rhode Island Department of Health
turns research into actionable data to better serve our state. We do wish we could
profile more as there is so much more to tell. These stories get to the essence of why
we do what we do, and the great challenge ahead for us in supporting these ongoing
missions.
Cheers,
David Marble
