David A . Brcka , M . D ., Joins OrthoAtlanta

David A . Brcka , M . D ., an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine , has joined OrthoAtlanta . Dr . Brcka , who has advanced training in arthroscopic hip preservation , was formerly a partner and attending physician at the Sports Medicine Institute in Clermont , Florida .

“ Dr . Brcka joins the OrthoAtlanta orthopedic sports medicine group in Newnan and Fayetteville to serve patients with many types of hip , knee and shoulder disorders ,” stated Michael Behr , M . D ., OrthoAtlanta Medical Director , in the February 1 , 2017 news release . “ While completing his fellowship , Dr . Brcka trained under the direction of Christopher Larson , M . D ., a widely recognized pioneer in hip arthroscopy . Today , Dr . Brcka brings this expertise to OrthoAtlanta to provide arthroscopic hip preservation surgery , and other arthroscopic treatments , to our patients .”
According to the news release , “ Dr . David Brcka graduated from Iowa State University , in Ames , Iowa , with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology . As an undergraduate student at ISU , Dr . Brcka was a member of the Iowa State University football team , and was elected as the first sophomore co-captain in the team ’ s 100-year history . His love of football and sports led him to his interest in sports medicine and treating sports injuries . Dr . Brcka received his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City , Iowa . He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Orlando Regional Healthcare in Orlando , Florida , followed by sports medicine fellowship training at Minnesota Orthopedic Sports Medicine Institute in Eden Prairie , Minnesota .

As for his plans , Dr . Brcka told OTW , “ I will start out by introducing myself to the local community ( patients , local businesses , and primary care physicians ), building a solid referral base , and educating referring partners and the community about femoroacetabular impingement and the benefits of arthroscopic treatment . In addition , I will soon get involved with local sports teams .” — EH
Antonia Zaferiou , Ph . D . Joins Rush as Director , Motion Analysis

Antonia Zaferiou ,

Ph . D ., has joined Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush as the Director of Motion Analysis for the Division of Sports Medicine . In this role , she will oversee orthopedic and sports medicine research in the Motion Analysis Lab .
According to the January 28 , 2017 news release , “ In 2015 , she earned her Doctor of Philosophy from the
Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern California ( USC ). During her studies in the USC Biomechanics Research Lab , she investigated the multi-joint control and dynamics of well-practiced and goaldirected movements , such as the golf swing and dance turns . Prior to joining Rush , Dr . Zaferiou was a postdoctoral fellow at University of Michigan , where she created algorithms that automatically analyze athletic performance using wearable sensors . She has also conducted biomechanics research at the VA of Greater Los Angeles ; Hospital for Special Surgery , New York ; and New York University ’ s Hospital for Joint Diseases .”
“ Dr . Zaferiou received her Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering at USC and her Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering at The Cooper Union . She has received several awards and fellowships , including numerous travel grants . She was also the recipient of the NSF-USC Viterbi Body Engineering and Myronis fellowships .
