New Sports Medicine & Cardiology Clinic Treats Athletes Post-COVID
Through a collaboration among the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery , the Department of Family and Community Medicine , and the Division of Pediatric Cardiology , the Sports Medicine and Cardiology Clinic was established in 2021 . This highly specialized clinic treats teenage and young adult athletes for issues such as postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome ( POTS , a blood circulation disorder ), and it also provides care for young athletes with certain post-COVID cardiology conditions , including myopathy and fatigue .
Faculty , Fellows Investigate COVID-19 Impact on Orthopaedic Surgery
UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Research Fellow Kyle Paul published , “ COVID-19 Impact on Orthopedic Surgeons : Elective Procedures , Telehealth , and Income ” in Southern Medical Journal in 2021 . Paul and his co-authors wanted to better understand the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on orthopaedic providers , so they distributed a 22-question digital survey through state orthopaedic organizations . Most of the responding practices reported limiting elective clinic visits and procedures early in the pandemic , and the authors noted that telehealth and similar services may help offset volume and revenue losses while also improving patient access to orthopaedic care .
COVID-19 and Sports Medicine : A Changing Environment

He also highlights the role of telehealth services in compensating for the pandemic ’ s disruption in patient care .
