COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION
UAB Orthopaedics offers a full range of resident and fellow training , all conducted on UAB Medicine ’ s downtown Birmingham campus .

Residency

The UAB Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program offers a five-year experience that provides comprehensive clinical training with an academic focus . Residents rotate with full-time , fellowship-trained faculty covering all orthopaedic disciplines , exposing them to the latest in state-of-the-art technology and procedures in every subspecialty .
Training takes place at several locations , including UAB Hospital , UAB Hospital-Highlands , Children ’ s of Alabama , Birmingham VA Hospital , and the American Sports Medicine Institute . All of these facilities are within a few miles of each other , making it possible for residents to attend divisional conferences and lectures .
Post-graduate fellowship training – one year in length and integrated with the residency – is provided in hand surgery , foot and ankle surgery , traumatology , spine , and research . Each program also has its own curriculum , lecture series , and journal clubs and rotates residents with the fellows . Research activities are conducted in each of the orthopaedic subspecialties .
