The UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery moves medicine forward with new ideas and well-developed research . New medical treatments and clinical trials are actively explored by our physician-scientists across multiple specialties . The department ’ s goal is to efficiently and safely translate these research findings into clinical care that benefits all patients .
Foot and Ankle Research
The Foot and Ankle Section is comprised of research-focused faculty and trainees . Research is supported by a fellowship , which has over 100 program graduates practicing nationally and around the world . UAB is the most active medical center in the region for total ankle arthroplasty , having performed over 350 primary arthroplasties and over 100 revision procedures , including replacements with new prostheses and post-prosthetic fusions .
UAB also has one of the largest series of Salto Talaris prostheses and performs the In Bone and STAR procedures . Extensive clinical research is ongoing in these areas . Extensive experience is also available for nerve disorders of the foot , including tarsal tunnel syndrome , recurrent tarsal tunnel , and recurrent neuromas . Ongoing research projects include the use of trabecular metal for bone gap replacement , fusions , and wedges .
