Royal Visit

On Friday 18th October students, staff and special guests including local MP Richard Shepherd and the Mayor and Mayoress of Walsall gathered to welcome HRH The Earl of Wessex to officially open Shelfield Community Academy’s £23million new facilities.

Prince Edward had the opportunity to see students accessing some of the latest technologies available in education including a 3D tour of World War 1 trenches in History, as well as the use of green screen, the academy radio station and 3D printer facilities in the Innovation Studio.

Prince Edward chatted to students in Science about how they use their transformer devices (a laptop/tablet device which each student is allocated) to enhance their learning in the classroom and at home.

Dylan Cotton (Year 8) said, “It made me feel really special that the Prince took the time to talk to me. He seemed really interested in the work I was doing about finding out if we could live on another planet.”

Our new Principal, Paula Ward, said, “It was a great honour to welcome His Royal Highness to Shelfield Community Academy. This official and prestigious occasion to mark the opening of the building seems appropriate at a time when the academy has so much to celebrate. Not only is Shelfield Community Academy an outstanding academy but it also achieved its best ever results this year.”
