Shelfield’s Year 12 Public Service students enjoyed a visit to the Houses of Parliament on Friday 22nd November. The group travelled to London and, as they drove into Westminster, saw famous sites such as Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park and Tyburn Place.
Staff and students entered Parliament through Port Cullis House, a very modern building where MP's have their offices and committee rooms.
The tour started in the Lobby - which is often seen on the news. One of the first stops was the House of Lords, which was aweinspiring. The groups were not allowed access into the House of Commons as it was in session and this was been beamed out live across the world by the BBC. Instead, the group was able to witness the debate from the public gallery box above the House Of Commons and were fortunate enough to see actual democracy in action.
Following a tour, our very well behaved students completed a workshop about the processes of making new laws, in which they discussed, debated, voted and passed a new law extending our weekends to Friday afternoon - something we all fully supported!
Mrs. Lockley, Mrs. Hickman and Mr. Singh were really impressed with the Year 12 students who were fantastic ambassadors for the Academy.
