Inter-Schools
Environmental Challenge
hosted by Severn Trent Water
Earlier this month a team of talented and enthusiastic year 7 science students, selected to represent Shelfield by Miss Darby, took part in an Inter-Schools Environmental Challenge hosted by Severn Trent Water.
In the first of two tasks, students had to work together to design, budget for, construct and test infrastructure to supply water to model towns.
The second task was much messier. All sorts of kitchenware was used, but not for cooking! Students had to treat some fairly disgusting ‘waste water’, attempting to make it clear and safe to drink. Students practised maths, communication and team working skills and found the day immensely enjoyable.
Whilst doing this, they learned about items which should not go down the plug hole or toilet, and how complicated the job is of supplying water to homes.
The students were a credit to Shelfield Academy and finished in a respectable joint Third place in the Challenge.
