state Information
Oregon is a state in the Pacific Northwest region
of the United States. It is located on the Pacific
coast, with Washington to the north, California to
the south, Nevada on the southeast and Idaho to
the east. The Columbia and Snake rivers delineate
much of Oregon's northern and eastern boundaries, respectively. The area was inhabited by many
indigenous tribes before the arrival of traders, explorers, and settlers who formed an autonomous
government in Oregon Country in 1843. The Oregon Territory was created in 1848, and Oregon
became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859.
Climate
Oregon has many different climates, ranging
from temperate rainforest climates on the Oregon
Coast, Mediterranean in the inland valleys, alpine
climates in the higher mountain regions, steppe
in the northeast and desert in the southeast. Like
Western Europe Oregon is considered warm for
its latitude and the state has far milder winters for
the given elevation than comparable latitude parts
of North America such as the upper Midwest, Ontario, Quebec, and New England.
Western Oregon's climate is heavily influenced by
the Pacific Ocean. The western third of Oregon is
very wet in the winter, moderately to very wet during the spring and fall, and dry during the summer. The relative humidity of Western Oregon is
high except during summer days which are semidry to semi-humid; Eastern Oregon typically sees
low humidity year round. The eastern two thirds
of Oregon have cold, snowy winters and very dry
summers; much of it is semiarid to arid like the
rest of the Great Basin though the Blue Mountains are wet enough to support extensive forests.
