Interesting American Bank Note Co. Special Printing that was
‘privately perforated’ according to cert. This is one of only 45
created by Washington stamp dealer Henry F. Colman. This
March 1894 printing was ordered from the American Bank
Note Company to serve as samples for the BEP, which had
just been awarded a four-year contract to print postage stamps.
Colman obtained a set of imperforate panes of 50 of the sample
stamps. He kept 5 imperforate sets and perforated the other
45. Colman was later indicted for illegal possession of the
stamps, but was later acquitted. Fresh, original gum, previously
hinged. Well centered example with bright color and paper.
Very fine. Catalog value reflects more common type of special
printing. (2005 PF Cert #0423586 & 2009 PSE Cert #01195382)
Cat $750.
