PH $4000 Choice example of this rare and desirable stamp, exceptional centering. Full original gum, previously hinged, reperforated at top, otherwise sound and extremely fine. The 4¢ invert was a later ‘special printing’ and nearly all have disturbed gum, and many are thinned as a result of being removed from mounting paper. Makes for an incredible showpiece! (2004 PSE Cert). Cat $6000. 1450 (293) 1898 TRANS-MISSISSIPPI $2 ORANGE BROWN ...................................................................... PH $3000 A well-centered example of this notoriously off-centered stamp. Original gum, lightly hinged, extremely fine. (1984 APS Cert #52908, 1996 PF Cert #299836, and 2003 PSE Cert #00096692). OrcoExpo 2014 • Anaheim, California USA Singles 03.pmd 41 (296a) 1901 PAN-AMERICAN 4¢ BROWN & BLACK, INVERTED CENTER ............................................... PH $20,000 The rarest of the Pan-American inverts and one of the classics of USA philately. The 4¢ invert was a special printing produced at the request of Third Assistant Postmaster General Edwin C. Madden. Of the 400 inverts originally produced, 106 were distributed by Madden to individuals inside and outside of government, a pane of 100 was given to the Post Office Department for the National Museum in Washington and 194 were later destroyed. From the pane of 100 given to the National Museum, 97 reached the philatelic community through an exchange for other stamps needed for the country’s collection, for a total of 203 distributed inverts (many with a specimen handstamp). Most of the 4¢ inverts are in rough condition and have badly disturbed gum. This example has nicer gum than normally found, with a few thin spots and a minor crease, fine for this. (1958 PF Cert #8848) Cat $75,000. Stamps & Postal History Page 41 11/27/2013, 3:32 PM
