THE ENGLISH BACCALAUREATE
The English Baccalaureate is a performance measure that recognises a student ’ s achievement at grade 5 or above in five subject areas :

English Mathematics History or Geography Combined Science OR two of the separate sciences from Physics , Biology and Chemistry OR Computer Science . A modern ( or ancient ) foreign language - French , Spanish or German are currently taught at Avon Valley . Other languages can also count ( e . g . Polish , Gujarati , Arabic …..).
We encourage a student with an interest and an ability in these subjects to opt for these ‘ traditional ’ and ‘ academic ’ subjects . The government is actively encouraging schools to increase its uptake of students entering the EBacc subjects and further guidance can be found here .

When considering option choices , the Russell Group Universities have put together a website with advice for subjects that may prove useful in order to study within one of their universities- twenty-four of the ‘ best ’ universities within the UK , including the Universities of Oxford , Manchester , Bristol , and Birmingham . It is also advisable to check local 6 th form provider websites as to desirable subjects at GCSE for study post-16 .

Learning 4 Life
To maintain the breadth to the curriculum in Year 9 , students will continue to study five subjects alongside the core subjects and their four chosen option subjects . These subjects allow students to develop their skills , knowledge and interest in a range of subjects ; history ; geography ; computing ; design technology and performing arts ( working towards the Bronze Arts Award through dance , drama , music , art or the John Muir Award in outdoor education ). The combination of subjects is decided by the subject choice made in Option A .

Learning 4 Life : 7 hours per fortnight are assigned , and the combination of lessons varies in light of the chosen subject
