This is a popular course aimed at those who enjoy taking part in sport and activity but want a more practical and vocational course than that offered by GCSE PE . There is no science involved , which suits many of our learners .
It consists of 4 Units which are delivered through a mixture of practical and classroom based sessions as modules .
1 Contemporary Issues in Sport 1 hour exam 2 Developing Sports Skills Internal assessment tasks 3 Sports Leadership Internal assessment tasks 4 Sport and the Media Internal assessment tasks
Module 1 is theory about how and why people take part in sport and influences on participation such as Barriers to Participation , the Olympics , Drugs in Sport & National Governing Bodies . This leads to a one-hour external exam that is sat at the end of Year 11 .
Module 2 students will have the opportunity to develop their practical performance in a team sport as well as an individual activity . They have to officiate in an activity so should have a good working knowledge of sports . Students also have to produce a written project on how they would improve weaknesses in an activity .
Module 3 is where students develop their planning , delivery and evaluation of coaching and leadership ability with the ultimate aim of teaching a 45-minute session in a sport of their choice .
Module 4 is a theory study of sport and the media , the relationship between the two and positive and negative effects of the media on sport . It includes an in depth study of an up to date story and how two forms of media cover it .
The structure of the course may allow students to undertake offsite visits to various sporting locations to enhance their understanding and experience of the areas that they study . They will create a portfolio of evidence to contain their theory work and to log officiating and coaching hours .
This will lead naturally into Level 2 or 3 national diplomas at post-16 study and will give students a good understanding and preparation for jobs in the sports and leisure industry .
Potential careers could include armed forces , leisure centre work and sports coaching . Contact Staff : Mr Payne & Mrs Hallam
