Exam board AQA , final examination :
25 % listening :
( Foundation or Higher tier ), final exam in May / June of Year 11
25 % reading :
( Foundation or Higher tier ), final exam in May / June of Year 11
25 % writing :
( Foundation or Higher tier ), final exam in May / June of Year 11
25 % speaking :
( Foundation or Higher tier ), final exam in April / May of Year 11
Written examination : Students study a range of topics to extend their vocabulary and grammatical knowledge , including a range of tenses ( past , present , future and conditional …). At the end of Year 11 , students complete the written exam . There is no coursework .
Oral examination : Students complete a speaking exam which consists of 3 parts ; a role play , a question and answer session based on a photo card stimulus , and a general conversation on 2 separate themes . The speaking exam will be conducted by the class teacher between April and May of Year 11 .
Topics include the follow 3 themes : Theme 1 : Identity & culture – myself , family , technology , free-time activities .
Theme 2 : Local , national & international areas of interest – town , health , environment , travel & tourism .
Theme 3 : Current & future study and employment – school & education , jobs , career choices and ambitions .
Students can no longer be entered at different tiers in the 4 skills . Students will now be entered at the same tier for all 4 skills , either Foundation or Higher ( reading , writing , speaking , and listening ).
Please note : this course is only available to students currently studying German .
In an increasingly globalised economy , being able to speak a foreign language is advantageous for a young person , presenting a fantastic opportunity to be exposed to diverse cultures and customs . Whatever the reason , studying a language offers a number of rewards . Students develop a better grasp of their mother tongue ; widen their career opportunities , and opportunities for travel & tourism or personal growth . Students will also develop tolerance and understanding of various cultures and widen their understanding of world affairs .
Here are a few examples of careers that use foreign languages : journalist , interpreter , translator , tourist guide , international sportsperson , sports coach , immigration officer , international lawyer , air cabin crew member , export / import business .
