Functional skills provide students with practical support in the use of maths and English in everyday life . The skills and knowledge learned will support the students in their study of their GCSEs .
In English , students learn how to write letters of application , complete forms correctly , write CVs , practise spellings and grammar .
In maths , students practise basic number skills which will support them in the understanding of bills , shopping , and how to manage their own money .
If students are at risk of not achieving the grade in GCSE maths and / or English , they can be entered for Functional Skills .
Students can be entered as Entry Level , Level 1 and / or Level 2 .

GCSE equivalent Pre-GCSE study Grades 1-3 in GCSE Grades 4-9 in GCSE
Assessment is through formal tests taken throughout the course , when the student is ready to take the qualification . The Functional Skills qualifications can provide students with a passport into college courses and build confidence in students .
