The OCR Art and Design GCSE has been designed to encourage learners to develop knowledge , skills and understanding along with creativity and imagination . The Textile Design pathway enables learners to explore and develop skills using a wide range of media and techniques including : Dyeing fabrics , printing fabrics , embroidery , felting techniques , patch working , construction techniques & fashion illustration .
GCSE Art assessment is based on four objectives :
Objective 1 : Researching artists and different art styles from different cultures and using this to inspire and develop your own ideas .
Objective 2 : Refine ideas through experimenting and selecting appropriate resources . Experimenting with a wide variety of materials and techniques to improve your skills and help create the best possible outcome for your final piece of work .
Objective 3 : Record ideas and observations through observational drawing of actual objects or from your own photographs .
Objective 4 : Present a personal , informed and meaningful response demonstrating analytical and critical understanding ; culminating in a relevant and intentional final piece of work .
Component 1 : Portfolio Non-exam assessment ( internally assessed and externally moderated ) 60 % of total CGSE .
A portfolio of practical work showing the learners ’ personal response to a set starting point , design brief , scenario or stimulus . This covers four separate assessment objectives and should include : the learner ’ s research , initial ideas , development of ideas , textile techniques and processes , presentation and recording of ideas .
Component 2 : Externally set task Non-exam assessment ( internally assessed and externally moderated ) 40 % of total GCSE .
Early release paper will be issued on 2 January each year and will provide learners with five themes , each with a range of written and visual starting points and stimuli . A response should be based upon one of these options .
Textile Design is not just about sewing clothes , there are a wide range of careers for which this qualification is useful : Fashion buyer , costume designer , textiles designer , fashion designer , weaver , wardrobe supervisor , milliner , upholsterer , pattern cutter , tailor / dress maker , technical designer . Students achieving a 4 and above will be well equipped for A level and a traditional route to Degree or HND level .
