Ophthalmic Viscosurgical Devices Market
Ophthalmic viscosurgical devices are a viscoelastic solution which is used during cataract surgery.
Ophthalmic viscosurgical devices are also referred as viscoelastic agents, and it is an essential tool for
anterior segment surgeon. These devices are also useful to create and maintaining the space in the
anterior chamber of the eye during the phacoemulsification and implantation of an intraocular lens.
Ophthalmic viscosurgical devices are transparent and gel like substance which has viscous and elastic
properties. The majority of ophthalmic viscosurgical devices contain sodium hyaluronate or
hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. There are different types of ophthalmic viscosurgical devices are available
in the market to support the surgical technique and workflow of cataract surgeon. Broadly, there are two
type of ophthalmic viscosurgical devices viz. Cohesive OVD and Dispersive OVD. Cohesive OVDs are a long
chain, high weight and high viscosity substance which act like “spaghetti”. Dispersive OVD are a short
chain, low molecular weight, and low viscosity substances which act like “macaroni”. There is less chances
of retention and risk of an IOP by use of cohesive OVD whereas dispersive OVD increase the risk of
elevated IOP. It is very necessary to select appropriate ophthalmic viscosurgical devices for a particular
job by understanding their pros and cons.
Rising cataract procedures worldwide is the primary factor driving the growth of ophthalmic viscosurgical
devices market. Lack of awareness of people regarding their regular eye checkup and delayed in disease
detection will upsurge the
