The collection is deep-rooted . In East Vancouver we had neighbours , Mr . and Mrs . Chin . In 1965 , I was nine or ten years old . They lifted the covenant in the British Properties that no Asians , Blacks or Jews could live there , and Mr . and Mrs . Chin ’ s successful son , Raymond , bought a house in the British Properties . I remember saying to my parents , “ But if they didn ’ t want him before , why would he ever go there ?” And so that side of it has always interested me . I also think my own sexuality and coming out in 1992 was completely different than today , and more challenging .
In this building , the Chinese Canadian Museum is going to mark the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act . From 1923 to 1947 , there were only fifty Chinese that were allowed to immigrate to Canada . Nobody knows the Chinese Exclusion Act , but we are Canadians and we hide our racism a lot better than Americans . These topics have to be brought up . These are really long and deep conversations , but I think it ’ s very necessary that we deal with our past and acknowledge that we are ignorant on so much of it . The art collection has given me a chance to explore these avenues with 21 shows , to show them to the city .
