From her spitfire lyrical finesse to her unapologetic and no-nonsense sound , Haviah Mighty is a force . Hailing from Greater Toronto ’ s Brampton area , Mighty credits much of her unique flare to the city that fostered her talents .
Her debut studio album , 13th Floor , acted as an outlet for Mighty to discuss challenging topics and social issues . For her efforts , she was awarded the 2019 Polaris Music Prize , the first hip-hop artist to win the award . Mighty ’ s video for “ Thirteen ” also picked up the 2021 Prism Prize for top Canadian music video alongside director and animator , Theo Kapidistrias . The powerful song refers to the 13th Amendment that abolished slavery in the United States in 1865 .
Following her prestigious wins , Mighty has shown no sign of slowing down , dropping her latest mixtape , Stock Exchange , in 2021 .
