As before, a partially electrified variant is being offered in three different main trim levels. All versions benefit from a larger underlying platform, built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) that is also 57 percent more rigid than the outgoing product, allowing better handling and a smoother, quieter ride. This is an important attribute to note because Toyota says it is pivoting the SUV back to its fun-to-drive, adventuring roots. Its appearance certainly reflects the fact: after losing most of a grille during the previous iteration, a large mesh unit takes up most of the front bumper, stacked above a gaping central intake. Believe it or not, the hybrid in XSE form is the sportiest looking of the bunch. The lower aero pieces, mirror caps and chunky fender arches, are finished in piano black. Even the roof is black. Other exclusive features include projector-beam LED headlights with unique signature LED daytime running lamps and a two-tone black and blue interior. Toyota Hybrid System II powers the compact SUV, revolving around a 2.5-litre Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine complemented by a trio of combination electric motor slash generators, mated to an Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT). The above mouthful of specifications results in a package that’s not only efficient — fuel economy is a remarkable 6.0 L/100 km in combined city and highway operation — but high in performance, as well yielding 219 net horsepower. The all-wheel drive sends an additional 30 percent of torque to the rear wheels for enhanced agility. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, bundling several driver- assistance technologies such as autonomous braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, radar cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane departure warning and keep assist.
