Volume 16 Issue 1 » 47 2020 Audi Q3 » Although introduced to other parts of the globe in 2011, Audi’s answer to the BMW X1 was only brought to North America about four years ago. And the subcompact crossover is already ripe for a refresh — quite an in-depth one at that. Rather than building an entry-level model, think of the Q3 as simply a smaller option in the lineup. Like its siblings, a blacked- out 3D octagonal single-frame grille dominates the front fascia. Trapezoidal air intakes, a low roofline, thin rear window and connected spoiler all contribute to a sporty appearance befitting the brand with the four rings. Thanks to a generous 2,680-millimetre-long wheelbase, the interior is flexible and quite spacious for the segment. For example, the second row accommodates up to three adults and the backrests are adjustable to seven different positions. Fold them forward, and 1,400 litres of storage space becomes available. The floor behind also has two height settings to fit various-sized cargo. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is standard equipment. Alternatively, customers may opt for the excellent Audi virtual cockpit replacing the cluster with a 12.3-inch display capable of showing a Google Earth overlay, performance data or other pertinent information. The Amazon Alexa voice assistant is built into the Q3. Occupants can talk to Alexa to stream music, audiobooks or access any one of her 80,000 skills ranging from language lessons to operating smart home devices remotely. In addition, the infotainment system understands natural speech so executing voice commands like inputting an address for navigation is much easier. Under the hood lies an efficient turbocharged 2.0-litre TFSI engine generating 230 horsepower while achieving a fuel consumption rating of approximately 7.7 L/100 km rating. Power is sent to all four wheels courtesy of the company’s lauded quattro all-wheel drive. In inclement weather and around bends, the intelligent AWD applies the brakes to individual corners where needed to produce a safe and stable ride every time.
