Volume 16 Issue 1 » 57 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB » Seeing as how there’s already a GLA and GLC in the Mercedes- Benz line-up, why not throw a GLB into the mix as well? Indeed, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed the addition of an all-new model to its ever-growing SUV portfolio. Built alongside the A-Class at the Aguascalientes plant in Mexico, the compact crossover possesses styling not really seen on any of its siblings. Boxy in design, the front-end features chunky rectangular LED headlamps mounted above matching LED foglights discreetly encased in a black housing. Contrast protective cladding runs over the wheel arches and side sills, finished off on both ends by decorative silver-coloured skid plates. Like other vehicles in the lineup, a beautiful digital widescreen panel replaces a traditional instrument cluster and standalone infotainment screen. Linked to the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) intelligent assistant, occupants can simply say, “Hey Mercedes,” and then a query or command that will be answered or executed. Individual turbine-inspired air vents are nestled below, matching the other machined aluminum pieces installed throughout the interior. The GLB 250 utilizes a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine rated at 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, mated to a quick-shifting 8G-DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission. The company’s proven 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system reliably puts power down to all four wheels at an 80:20 distribution in normal operation, or a more nimble 70:30 when Sport mode is activated. As expected, the crossover rides quiet and smooth on suspension that has been specifically tuned for optimal acoustics and vibration resistance. It also borrows safety technology from the S-Class flagship sedan such as an advanced camera and radar setup capable of “seeing” up to 500 metres ahead. This allows for functionality such as autonomous braking before corners, intersections, and roundabouts using the integrated Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and map and navigation data. Seeking a little extra kick under the hood? A 302-horse AMG GLB 35 4MATIC is available as well, which will do 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds.
