to viewpoints overlooking a series of
waterfalls and their creations: seven popular
waterholes. Today, crowds of swimmers
frolic in these natural pools.
Pipiwai Trail winds upstream to a less
explored park area. Skirting ancient
Hawaiian taro farms, guava orchards and
patches of wild yellow hibiscus, we zigzag
through hardwood groves and across
wooden bridges. The trail soon becomes
a boardwalk traversing a giant bamboo
forest. Here, whispering breezes blow
boney bamboo stalks into a ghostly clatter.
Exiting into thick foliage, our trek ends at
a refreshing pool under 400-foot Waimoku
Falls. Sprawling upon flat rocks, we bask in
the grandeur.
On the way back to our cottage, we
stumble upon Hana’s original town site at
Hamoa Beach where only an abandoned
sugar warehouse remains. Sea cliffs
surround its sandy white crescent and
picturesque bay. Coconut-topped, Alau
Island seems to float offshore.
By extending our stay in Hana, we delight
in natural beauty and the timeless grace of
old Hawaii.
