STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING
G U D R U N TA S T I N G R O O M
I had to end on a sweet note. If it’s not Eton Mess or Spotted
Dick, it’s Sticky Toffee Pudding… at least this is understood by
most North Americans.
Drive to Steveston Village in Richmond for this, and you can
thank me later. Hidden away in a touristy neighbourhood is a local
favourite: Gudrun Tasting Room. It’s a quaint and sophisticated
wine bar and restaurant with boutique wines, charcuterie, cheese
and a daily fresh sheet. The cooked items are limited, but the
mainstays are the mac ’n cheese and house-made Sticky Toffee
Pudding.
The pudding is rich and decadent, but the sponge cake itself is
airy light, soft and moist. The hot sticky toffee sauce is nicely

caramelized and quite sweet, so good thing it’s not poured on top
of the cake, as it usually is. The Pink Lady apples also help to lend
acidity to counter the sweetness. I prefer it served with vanilla ice
cream instead of fresh Chantilly cream, but I appreciate their “no
freezer” philosophy.
Side note, if you really want those mushy peas and you’ve made your
way to Steveston Village, then get them at Dave’s Fish and Chips
nearby.
