PALEO ESSENTIALS!

Check out my favorite PALEO recipe this month on the back cover!

Sadly, I must cover what is NOT allowed as this is as important as what is allowed!

The most standard things to avoid across all versions of the Paleo diet that are pretty self explanatory would be all sugar, especially high fructose corn syrup (only raw honey and 80% dark chocolate is allowed on occasion), refined seed and vegetable oils as they are only available after heavy processing and have no nutritional value in the least. Likewise, avoiding grains (particularly wheat) and legumes (such as soy) are always recommended on every version of Paleo I have ever come across. The guy who said ‘Eat meet, not birdseed’ was referring to grains as birdseed because, well, flour is ground up seeds. On a more serious note, there has been much talk about the role of grains in autoimmune disorders and heart disease. Needless to say, grains often are not just unnecessary carbs, but cause post meal fatigue and other gastrointestinal issues. I know my energy levels and general well-being after meals has increased greatly since cutting out such foods. The man who referred to grains as birdseed also said that if you absolutely cannot go with out birdseed, brown rice is the ‘least evil’ of all grains. In terms of carbs, potatoes and sweet potatoes are ok in moderation if you absolutely must---some athletic types seem to really rely on these for recovery meals. But this does NOT mean FRENCH FRIES! Your potatoes if you have them should be baked (cut’ em up like French fries for nostalgia), boiled, mashed up with seasoning or what have you, just not fried up in diesel fuel!

Keep in mind there are many other things you can eat in moderation which I will cover in the next issue—but refer to my pyramid until next time for a more comprehensive list of specific foods.
