Designing OneWaterSF
OneWaterSF is intended to be dynamic and flexible, so the process of initiating its implementation
has been deliberately organic and iterative. Starting with a diverse internal working group
representing each of the SFPUC’s resource areas, OneWaterSF is being built from the ground
up. The focus of the early implementation of OneWaterSF has been on identifying synergistic,
near-term opportunities across the SFPUC that demonstrate the philosophy of OneWaterSF.
Establishing the OneWaterSF Working Group
The OneWaterSF Working Group reflects the culture of collaboration that is essential to the
successful implementation of OneWaterSF. The Working Group includes staff representation
from Water, Wastewater, Power, Finance, and External Affairs. The Working Group serves as
an open platform to share ideas and discuss how the application of the Guiding Principles of
OneWaterSF can enhance projects and programs to provide multiple benefits for the SFPUC,
our customers, and the environment. The initial focus of the Working Group has been on
identifying the 2017 Initiatives. To do this, the group’s focus has been on:
• Reviewing existing or planned projects and programs
that may provide multiple benefits;
• Identifying opportunities that help better manage our
resources by leveraging technology and collaboration;
• Establishing expected outcomes and measures for success, if applicable.
Through this collaborative effort, the Working Group identified nine Initiatives that build
upon other successful projects and programs the SFPUC has implemented that embody a
One Water approach. With the implementation of these 2017 Initiatives, we will continue to
advance the SFPUC’s tradition of innovation to better serve the needs of our communities and
our environment.
