NAMING OF THE
BARBARA AND EDWARD PARTRIDGE
ATRIUM
James Estes’ commitment to the fight against cancer
evolved after having lost family members to the disease
and having celebrated remission and recovery himself.
He and his family have supported several cancer
research initiatives at UAB over the years. Longtime
supporters of the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center
at UAB, Estes and his son Norman, helped to honor
Dr. and Mrs. Edward Partridge by making a donation
to name the ground floor atrium of the Wallace Tumor
Institute.
Partridge was the Cancer Center director for ten

years and was with UAB for more than 45 years
until his retirement in July 2017. His wife Barbara
made exceptional contributions herself, consistently
demonstrating an outstanding level of dedication to
the facility and the people who worked there. The lobby
of the Cancer Center signifies a special location to the
Partridges as they often brought the Cancer Center
staff together for special occasions and celebrations. It
also is the location of the front door where they had a
reputation for welcoming everyone. This tribute is most
fitting as Partridge often refers to the Cancer Center as
“the people‘s Cancer Center.”
