Building Foundation, on what the Foundation means in practice and how to get involved. We will hear from a landowner and a housebuilder who are doing just that. Then a long stretch of
networking, because the relationships formed that afternoon are the point of the exercise. We will also be lighting a bronze torch to signify the start of the campaign for change, produced locally by a master craftsman, which will then travel to each of the other 13 regions.
Kent follows, then the North West, both over the next three to six months- each built around the firms and institutions already operating there, so the national picture assembles from the ground up rather than being imposed from above.
Where BMF members come in We are delighted to have the Builders Merchants Federation supporting this initiative, with its CEO John Newcomb on the advisory board. When I presented the Foundation to the BMF’ s Regional and Sector Chairs earlier this year alongside Professor Ashley Wheaton, Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Built Environment, the question from merchants in the room was: how do we get involved?
The honest answer is that merchants and suppliers are not supporters of this ecosystem- they are central to it.
Consistent specification is a conversation that has to include the people supplying the materials from the very beginning, not once the drawings are fixed. Visibility of a regional pipeline months ahead of an order is worth considerably more than a phone call on the day.
The regional builder is a good, durable customer, one who trains the next generation of tradespeople. Championing that customer is in the commercial interest of every business in the BMF.
The Foundation is building its membership now across landowners, regional housebuilders, professionals, funders and the supply chain, and we are looking for merchant and supplier partners in all 14 regions.
If you would like to understand what that looks like in your part of the country, or simply want to see a forum for yourself, we would be glad to hear from you.
