vocational training, at a local level, that is valued and respected by students, parents & employers. In the“ The Guardian” online, Hannah Spencer MP was quoted as saying:
“ There is huge potential to create so many well paid, highly skilled and very rewarding jobs through the transition to a green economy, with workers at the heart of it. We need people, of all ages, to train in sectors like renewable energy, home insulation and sustainable transport”.
Kevin Doyle( Henshaws’ Branch Manager) describes their recent branch opening in Denton to Hannah Spencer MP
“ But for those of us with experience in the trades, we know it’ s not what the qualifications are called that stop people training. It’ s the fact that once we’ re qualified, we’ re still looked down on and undervalued or seen as‘ less than’ because we didn’ t go to university. Time will tell over whether Andy Burnham is seriously committed to tackling this”.
THE MP for Gorton and Denton visited Henshaws Roofing & Building Supplies in Denton, their third branch in Greater Manchester, that opened two months’ ago. Ms Spencer heard how the merchant transformed an empty building- previously occupied by a company that repaired fire engines- by converting it into a thriving new merchant branch that now employs 7 local people.
Hannah Spencer was welcomed by Rachel Shelley( Marketing Manager), Kevin Doyle( Branch Manager) and Brett Amphlett( Builders Merchants Federation). Touring the 1½ acre site, she saw the everyday trade essentials and value-added products available to Henshaws’ customers in Gorton & Denton. Henshaws’ expertise is in building and roofing materials- so improving existing buildings and carrying out home energy upgrades is important to the business.
Rachel Shelley, Marketing Manager, commented:
“ We were delighted to welcome Hannah Spencer to our new Denton branch. It isn’ t every day you get to meet an MP who has actually worked in the trade, so it was a genuine pleasure to show her around and talk shop.”
“ We were proud to explain how Henshaws has grown since 1985, the jobs we have created locally, and our work to help customers choose more energy-efficient and responsibly sourced materials.”
This visit included discussion on making homes more resilient against overheating following the heatwaves of recent weeks. Protecting homes from flooding and the need for water conservation were also topics raised during Hannah Spencer’ s visit that require more awareness by the public.
Before entering Parliament, Ms Spencer worked as a plumber, gas engineer and plasterer and is well known locally as“ Hannah the Plumber”. She is the Green MP who leads on housing policy- and is keen to encourage more young people to choose a career in the skilled, low carbon trades that the country urgently needs.
Subsequent to her visit, the new Prime Minister announced plans to overhaul the education system in England to boost technical educational. Andy Burnham MP wants more high-quality
