Supported by the British Heart Foundation and Manchester Medical Services, MCFA plans to place an automated external defibrillator (AED) within all FA Charter Standard Community Clubs in Greater Manchester and promote life-saving CPR skills.
At this year’s Manchester County FA AGM, our member clubs and leagues voted unanimously in favour of utilising the financial provisions within the County FA’s benevolent fund to help support and fund AEDs in clubs and also at central venue league sites.
With the support of both MCFC and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, a joint investment of around £15,000 has now been secured.

Manchester County FA is delighted to have teamed up with Manchester City and Rio Ferdinand to announce an initiative with the potential to save lives.
Manchester County FA chief executive Colin Bridgford spoke of his delight in securing additional support from both the Red and Blue sides of the city.
“The support from Manchester City and Rio Ferdinand has been tremendous,” he said. "I am grateful for the support of all involved which will now allow us to provide a greater number of AEDs to grassroots football".
“Utilising the funds that we have and influencing key partners to support the initiative has been a huge achievement. As a County FA we pride ourselves on supporting our grassroots in Greater Manchester.
“The investment in AEDs illustrates that here at Manchester County FA the welfare of all involved in the grassroots game is paramount and anything that we can do to help and maybe save a person’s life is the right thing to do”
Bernard Halford (Life President, Manchester City FC) made the initial proposal with Colin to MCFA Council and in June it was the ratification by our embers that encouraged Bernard and Colin to seek further support from our partners.
In addition to the backing of our professional clubs, Colin was keen to ensure that the initiative was supported by the County FA's medical support partner Manchester Medical Services and the British Heart Foundation.
Shirley McNally, fundraising volunteer manager at the British Heart Foundation, explained how vital the initiative could prove.
“Witnessing a cardiac arrest can be a terrifying experience,” she admitted. “But prompt CPR from bystanders, including hands-only CPR, and using a nearby defibrillator can often prove the difference between life and death.
“Having more of these life-saving machines available in Greater Manchester would be a welcome sight. They’ll help save lives not only in their clubs but the wider community too.”
Sylvia Thomas of Manchester Medical Services revealed that there would be continuous support for MCFA and our promotion of this campaign.
"Manchester Medical Services are delighted to support Manchester County FA with their campaign to promote the installation of automatic external defibrillators at community football club venues," she said.
"It is our desire to support this campaign even further by offering training in the use of these machines together with basic life support skills. For further information contact Dave Mylett at [email protected]."
