IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE BOYS
s we saw in the Olympics the quality of British women`s, and especially girls, football is on the rise. Sadly, as we also saw, it isn`t quite there yet. In fourteen years as manager Hope Powell has changed her hairstyle more than her tactics; and that a meagre once. However, in the North West there is a different hope, a hope for the future. Two thriving girls’ leagues have been maintained and besides the local Academies (Blackburn and Liverpool) and the development centres (Blackpool, Man City, Bury, Burnley, Preston, Wigan) some autonomous outfits have been instrumental in giving girls football a boost. The North Valley league is possibly the best run of the local leagues. The committee deserve plaudits for their approach to grass roots football. The U16s was won at a romp by Academy Juniors, based in Bromley Cross. The Academy girls have also impressed in the U15s, winning their age group`s North Valley title. Another club with an impressive range of talent running through the club is Penwortham Girls who we hope to feature in more depth (as with other grass roots girls clubs) at a later date.
