Simon was born in 1959 in Boston, Lincolnshire and joined Blackburn Rovers as an apprentice, turning professional in July 1978. He played 474 league games for Rovers, in which he scored a club-record 168 goals. He also enjoyed spells at West Brom, Wycombe Wanderers and Torquay United. 1.
