SPREADING "CROSS THE COUNTRY"
Ashley Cammiso
What is Cross Country?
Cross Country is a running sport in which runners compete against each other and the clock across rough terrain, through woods and even over hills. Cross Country sometimes requires hurdles or obstacles and is timed. Cross Country is an individual and team sport that is always outdoors through many different weather settings, including rain, snow, sunshine, sleet, hail, wind and a rather large range of temperatures. Men and women of all ages, races, and religions compete in Cross Country. Cross Country is held all over the world it is a popular sport and is similar to track and field.
At the Starting Line
The running sport of Cross Country originated in England in the early 1800s. Original Cross Country courses were much rougher than today’s courses. Participants were required to run through streams, jump over fences, and go over hedges. The NCAA National Championships for men began in 1938. The first NCAA National Championships for women began in 1981. The English championship was the first national competition for the sport of Cross Country in 1876 and the International XC Championships were held for the first time in 1903. This event lasted from 1903 to 1972.
The Difference between Cross Country & Track
Often times, people will sign up for cross country and expect it to be like track & field, or vice versa. This however is not the case as there are many differences. Track & field has a variety of races and field events that involve a circular track. If outdoors, it’s 400 meters around, whereas indoors is usually around 200 meters. Cross country is always outside, in any conditions, involving hills, flat land, mud, cement, grass, rain and snow. Usually Cross Country is in autumn and winter, and track is normally in the spring and summer. Cross Country is normally long distances and track and field is relatively short. You normally run miles in Cross Country, whereas you run meters in track and field.
There’s Fashion in Running too!
Many people believe that when running Cross Country you just throw on any old pair of clothes, but that is not the case. Cross Country can get dirty, so runners make sure to wear something that they don’t mind getting messy. Cross County participants also would wear shorts and a tank top, or similar, light clothing. Cross Country runners know how important it is to wear comfortable clothing, so they are not fixing their clothes the entire time, which may lead to a bad placing or time. If it is colder outside, runners wear long shorts or capris and a t-shirt, but are aware that they will warm up while they are running. Runners pull their hair back if it is long to keep it out of their face.
If The Shoe Fits
As we learned before, Cross Country is 100% running, but did you know that just by wearing the wrong shoe you could cause mild to severe foot pain and problems?
