Rosendal ' s castle outside Djurgården in
Stockholm is a unique document of the
Swedish empirical style , so called Karl
Johan style . Rosendal was a pleasure castle
where members of the royal family went
when they wanted to get away from the
formal court life in town .
Rosendal Castle is located on the Kungl .
Djurgården and was built in the 1820s for
King Karl XIV Johan .
Rosendal was a pleasure castle to retreat to
and enjoy the summer at Djurgården . Karl
XIV Johan and his family used Rosendal
extensively during their summer periods in
Stockholm . On nice days you went horse
and carriage to Djurgården to walk in the
nature park and you were happy to arrange
receptions of various kinds at Rosendal .
To a large extent , the castle still stands
today as it did during Karl Johan ' s time ,
which makes Rosendal a unique document
of the Swedish empirical style , so - called
Karl Johan style .
During the summer months visitors are
given the opportunity to go guided tours of
the castle .
