Rosendal was a pleasure castle where members of the royal family went when they wanted to get away from the formal court life in town . Rosendal Castle is located on the Kungl . Djurgården and was built in the 1820s for King Karl XIV Johan . Rosendal was a pleasure castle to retreat to and enjoy the summer at Djurgården . Karl XIV Johan and his family used Rosendal extensively during their summer periods in Stockholm . On nice days you went horse and carriage to Djurgården to walk in the nature park and you were happy to arrange receptions of various kinds at Rosendal . To a large extent , the castle still stands today as it did during Karl Johan ' s time , which makes Rosendal a unique document of the Swedish empirical style , so - called Karl Johan style . During the summer months visitors are given the opportunity to go guided tours of the castle .
