The museum was founded in 1954 . It is located in
the building of the Gabrielli Palace and is named
after Sergei Mashera , a Yugoslav sailor , a hero of
the Second World War .
In the museum you can view archaeological
collections brought from sea voyages from
prehistoric times to the Middle Ages .
The ethnological collection of the solonchak
shows a way of collecting salt . In the fishing
collection they are offered to get acquainted
with models of vessels , tools and equipment for
individual and industrial fishing , as well as
exhibits of various methods of fish processing . In
the main historical , ethnological and artistic -
historical collections of marine artifacts , from
the Middle Ages to the end of the Second World
War , you can see an exhibition of famous models
of Gruber ships , as well as models of various
other types of vessels - from galleons to large
sailboats - navigational instruments , uniforms
seaman , paintings of seascapes , various ship
equipment , photographs taken on board ships ,
etc .
The Maritime Museum also manages three other
collections outside its own site : the Villa of Saint
Mark in Portoroz , the House of Ton in St . Peter
and the saline stoves of Salinas .
