PLACE CHARLES DE GAULLE
The Arc de Triomphe was opened in 1836 by the
French King Louis Philippe , who dedicated it to the
armies of the Revolution and the Empire . An
unknown soldier was buried at the foot of the arch
in 1921 . The flame of memory flares up every day at
18 : 30 .
The architect Jean - Francois Chalgreen was inspired
by the Roman arch of Titus in one arch , but went
beyond it in exceptional dimensions ( about 50 m in
height , 45 m in length and 22 m in width ) and
luxurious columns .
From the top of the panoramic terrace of the Arc de
Triomphe , a breathtaking view of the whole of Paris
opens .
