CALLE DE ALCALÁ, 42
This building is one of the most
striking symbols of the
architecture of modern Madrid . At
the time of completion of
construction ( in 1910 ), the
Metropolis was the highest
building in this city , its height was
45 meters . It would seem not so
much , however , until this point ,
Madrid basically grew not in
height , but in breadth . Only a
decade later , the “ palm of
superiority ” left the 14 - storey
building built next door ( the
“ Palace of Press ”).
Jules and Raymond Fevre - the
architects of this building -
managed to create a real
masterpiece of “ New Art ”.
Corinthian style columns , figures
that symbolize various branches of
Spain ( industry , agriculture ,
trade ), as well as the statue of
Nike , crowning the Metropolis
dome - all this is a real decoration
not only of the building , but of the
whole of Madrid .
