Since 1905 the Leipzig New Town
Hall ( Neues Rathaus ) is the seat of
the Leipzig city administration . The
New Town Hall was built in the
style of historicism . The main
tower is with 114 . 8 meters the
tallest city hall tower in Germany .
The New Town Hall is situated on
the site where the Pleissenburg
Castle stood . The Pleissenburg
Castle was built in the 13th
century and named after the river
Pleisse which runs nearby .
At Pleissenburg Castle the Leipzig
Debate ( German : Leipziger
Disputation ) took place in 1519 . It
was a disputation between the
reformer Martin Luther and Johann
Eck , a defender of Catholic
doctrine . The debate led the Pope
to censor Luther and threaten him
with excommunication from the
Catholic Church . In 1539 Martin
Luther was back in Leipzig and
preached the implementation of
reformation .
