TOWN HALL SQUARE
The history of Grazer - Rathouse ( Graz Town
Hall ) illustrates how the second largest city in
Austria flourished over the centuries . After the
two previous town halls could not cope with
the growing number of employees , the city
administration of Graz built this stunning out -
of - town historical - old German mansion in
1893 .
The four - level building stands on the southern
border of the Town Hall Square . It was
designed by Viennese architects Vilemans and
Reuters , and the construction was financed
from the funds obtained through wine
exports . Niche statues include images of
notable Austrian figures located in the
neoclassical facade . Here you can find statues
representing the Habsburg emperors , as well
as four sculptures dedicated to art , science ,
commerce and industry .
Go through the mayor ' s office to see the
exquisite collection of canvases . On the left
side of the main entrance you will see a
picture of 1971 , depicting the Grazer - Rathaus
of that time . The original coffered ceilings ,
gallery , chandelier and wall clock were
preserved in a two - level meeting room . Climb
the stairs to the first floor and there you will
enter the Wedding Hall .
