It was erected in 1945 in memory of those Soviet soldiers who laid down their lives during the Second World War . The Tiergarten Memorial was brought to life thanks to the efforts of talented sculptors Tsigal and Kerbel , as well as the architect Sergievsky . Every year on May 8 , to this day , solemn wreaths are laid in memory of fallen soldiers . Until 1994 , this monument , located in West Berlin , was attributed to the Soviet enclave . Only after the collapse of the USSR was an agreement signed between Russia and Germany on the obligations of the German side in caring for the memorial to fallen soldiers in the Tiergarten . The monument itself is a series of columns , inside of which is a rather large stela . In the center there is a statue of a Soviet soldier reaching eight meters in height , who saved a German girl at the cost of his own life . On the pillars of the Tiergarten memorial are carved the names of the soldiers who died during the tragic events of World War II . On both sides there are two T - 34 tanks , as well as two guns that directly participated in the Battle of Berlin . On the left and right sides of the main walkway of the monument are the graves of officers of the Soviet Union .
