M
y house is an eclectic mix
of things that bring me joy. Whether it’s from
a business trip, vacation or just local shopping;
if I'm going to bring it into my home and live
with it, I need to love it and connect with it. I
curate the pieces I surround myself with.
Same goes for my wardrobe. Style isn't
achieved by walking into a store buying six or
eight pieces and boom, you are dressed. The
key to creating a look that reflects your style is
collecting pieces that you love and working
them into your look with the classic basics.
To me the best way to find things is to stumble
upon them. It’s like Murphy's Law for
shopping. You never find anything if you set
aside a specific time to shop for it. Instead,
pop into those stores that are near other
places you frequent. Stopping at the
drugstore? Head into the TJ Maxx or Marshalls
that is next door. Need stamps? Hey isn't
there a new little boutique right there? On a
weekend trip somewhere? Check out the local
shops for unique items you won't see anyone
else back home. My current favorite places to
shop are consignment stores. You can find the
most
fabulous designer things. It's amazing what a
little tailoring or new buttons can do for a more
vintage looking piece. You can’t beat the
prices.
It’s much less onerous to randomly stop in now
and then to see what’s new than to shop on a
specific day. Not to mention, frequent
shopping helps you build a relationship with
the store clerks. They know what is new and
what is on sale and can recommend things you
might overlook. The employees generally
know their stuff and really do want to help you
find something you love. Trust me I was one. It
wasn't the sale that mattered, it was the
customer satisfaction. A happy customer is
way more likely to come back. Once that
relationship is established it’s like shopping
with your really stylish friend.
Before you know it, your wardrobe will be a
treasure trove of your favorite things. Wearing
them gives them life. They become a part of
you and make you look and feel more
interesting.
