The check workers start their day by grabbing these bags at the hotel . The check captain , an experienced worker who helps coordinate the rest of the group , is responsible for knowing the route to the outcheck , driving and stocking the rental van , and generally making sure things run smoothly .
Once at the outcheck , workers unload the van , setting out the mats , bike stands , tool boards , lubricants , tables and ez-ups . They mix fuel , put out water and prepare food ( usually peanut butter and jelly sandwiches , candy bars , crackers and fruit , all helpfully cut into bite size pieces ). When riders arrive , workers are there , ready to fetch anything they might need . Once the riders have left , check workers clean up and load the van up . That night , they will stock up on any depleted items and return the check bags to the hotel for the riders to refill .
Although they cannot touch the bike , there are also professional mechanics ( trophy team riders are required to supply a mechanic from their team ) at the checkpoints . If something goes wrong , they talk the rider ( both trophy and club ) through how to make it right again . They also
