In addition to the helpers , there is also a volunteer who runs the time sheet . Each rider must leave the start at a specific time , but it is difficult to keep track of time while also knocking out bike work as fast as you can . The time sheet worker ’ s job is to keep track of that for them . They monitor each rider and periodically let them know how much time they have remaining in their work period .
This year , the first place that riders arrived after the start was a special test . There are usually two to three workers per each test . During the transfer trail , riders wear toolpacks ( in case of mechanical issues out on the trail ) and hydration systems . Since the tests are short and intense , packs become unnecessary weight . Upon arriving to a test riders remove their packs and hand them to a workers , who holds it for safekeeping . After the rider exits the test , the worker meets them on the other side and returns their packs . The special test workers typically supply fresh water for the riders before and after the tests . Another worker has a clipboard that they write the test times down on – that way the riders can see how they ’ re stacking up against the competition throughout the day .
There are several “ outchecks ” during the day - checkpoints that aren ’ t at the paddock . The check workers also begin their day at the crack of dawn . Every night , riders pack a “ check bag ” for each outcheck . They contain anything specific the rider wants to have at that checkpoint : air filters , spare parts , drink mixes and food .
