If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me - where is the seat on your trials bike ? - I might have enough money to actually buy a seat . Saturday , September 18th I found myself asking the same question “ where is the seat ?”
Necessity is the mother of invention and we really shouldn ’ t argue with that philosophy . However , modern trials motorcycles are blatantly disregarding a dudes need to simply take a load off . To this dreamer , The Geico Endurocross course looked like a great place for a trials rider to have some fun . Indeed , the sections are a blast to ride but trying to ride them fast is an incredible challenge . After a single lap I knew I was in for a long night , understanding my legs would be jelly 40 seconds into the race .
I mapped out a plan to simply go slow , settle into last place and try not to embarrass my friends and family . For 3 / 4ths of the first lap I was racing according to plan ; I was in last place . While trailing the field going into the dreaded log matrix , three of my fellow racers got tangled up . I did what any
seasoned trials rider would do … I weighted the outside peg and went right around the mess and into 2nd place .
Before I knew what had happened the crowd roared as I moved from last to 2nd as they instinctively knew this was not supposed to happen . I cleared the last two obstacles on the first lap and had several bike lengths on the rest of the field .
I held the position and my breath for a couple of laps before crashing over the finish line jump falling back to 4th . My legs were screaming and my hands were in full on cramp mode . The bike felt like a bucking bronco and I was just trying to hang on and failing with each twist of the throttle . 30 seconds after crash number one comes crash number two and it was a dandy , over the bars .
